There’s a significant challenge for all product design companies.  Every manufacturer wants their next product to stand out from the pack, be different, and wow consumers.  On the other hand, they don’t want to scare consumers away with a completely alien design.  How do designers attempt to create a unique new product while staying consistent with the design elements that users have come to expect?  Sometimes risks pay off, but they can also sink a company if they aren’t thought through carefully.

Being Unique

In an era when consumers can go online to find hundreds of different products, what makes yours stand out?  In many cases, StudioRed can determine what elements consumers really respond to and emphasize those in a new design.  In a lot of cases, being unique doesn’t mean completely re-inventing the wheel.  By communicating with customers, you can get a true sense of the elements that they love the most and designing your product with that feedback in mind.

Being Consistent

The balance that’s tough to maintain, however, is consistency with consumer expectations.  First, if your product is new, you have to be conscious of how consumers expect to use products like yours.  For instance, if you’ve got a great new phone design, you have to look at the functionality that consumers expect from other phone companies.  Second, existing products must be redesigned carefully.  Products that are altered too much may end up being hard to use or even unsafe to use.

Combining Two Concepts

Achieving a balance between unique and consistent can be difficult.  Go too unique and you risk alienating current users.  Stay too consistent and you risk blending in with the competition. StudioRed has extensive experience in the area of product development, and our designers can help you achieve that perfect balance that you’re looking for.
