Studio Red joined with Trimble to develop a high volume GPS product for US Special Forces. Required to operate from 20,000 feet above to two fathoms below sea level while still providing accurate data, this stringent operational spec was compounded by chemical factors, including endurance to nuclear washdown with caustic cleaners. The final version is leg-mounted, readable under water and capable of surviving high impact. The rubber grips on the sides allow a scuba diver to handle the device without difficulty. The usage environment required unique sealing techniques developed by Studio RED using ultrasonic welding and liquid gluing methods.
Multiple battery cases are optional depending on what is available in the region of use. The team used a special Xenoy material for the main housing, which does not degrade during use or chemical washes. In addition to providing the product development, sister company Studio Red Production Services produced all the tooling and parts in Taiwan. |
